What used to be a solid blast protective cover above the missile is now a glass see-through cover where you can look down to visually see a missile standing in launch position. It's an outdoor self-guided tour of one of the actual missile sites. The silo is located about 10 minutes drive west from the launch control facility and was one of many remote missile silo sites controlled by the launch control facility. The silo isn't located at the launch control facility. Only a small amount of people can fit into the control room at any one time. The actual launch control room is basically a thick steel pod mounted on huge shock absorbers with a walkway connecting it to the non-shock absorber protected remainder of the underground complex. Not a ticket in the true sense, but only to keep the amount of visitors to a manageable size per visit. A self-guided cell phone tour is available at the silo to explain the components found at the site.Ī ticket pass is required to visit the underground launch facility because of its small size. The Delta-09 missile silo is open from 8:00 a.m. All tour participants must be able to be physically capable of climbing two 15 foot ladders unassisted in the event of an elevator failure. The tour route proceeds with a walk through of the grounds and topside support building before descending in the original elevator 31 feet to enter the underground control center. The tour begins and ends at the entry gate to the Delta-01 compound. The Control Center Tour lasts thirty minutes. Reservations can be made on-line or by phone at 86. To fully experience the park, you should visit all three sites.īeginning in October 2016, all tours of the Delta-01 Launch Control Facility require advanced reservations and an amenity fee. The two historic sites which make up the park are four miles (Launch Control Facility Delta-01) and 15 miles (Launch Facility Delta-09) from the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is located immediately north of I-90, exit 131. Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is located at three sites along a fifteen mile stretch of Interstate 90 in western South Dakota.
